Wrasses are found throughout the world in tropical and temperate seas. They are often abundant among coral reefs. Most wrasses are carnivorous and prey on marine invertebrates. Some small wrasses, however, such as young blueheads (Thalassoma bifasciatum) and Labroides species, act as cleaners for larger fishes. They pick off and eat the external parasites of groupers, eels, snappers, and other fishes that visit them periodically.
